Spotlight: Dr. Kes Chetty Education Award 2022

July 1, 2022

By MOSAIC Communications Team

As a long-standing MOSAIC tradition, the Dr. Kes Chetty Education Award is given annually to a MOSAIC client, immigrant or refugee to pursue academic or vocational studies in honour of former MOSAIC Board Member and long-time activist Dr. Kes Chetty.

Both of the 2022 recipients are clients with our youth programs and were nominated by Monica Navarro-Cespedes, Youth Projects Coordinator at MOSAIC. Read more about them below:

Hanna Yohannes Yihdego: Hannah arrived in Canada from Eritrea in 2019 with her family, mid-way through the school year. She worked hard to catch up and after graduating from high school this year, she plans to attend either Douglas College or Langara College. She has participated in a number of youth programs at MOSAIC, including wellness workshops, the Youth Documentary Project, and NuYu Theatre Project.

“Hanna is an excellent example of working hard to overcome barriers, and of perseverance and maturity at such a young age,” says Monica.

Nastaran Qubadi: Nastaran began participating in youth programming at MOSAIC in the summer of 2020, joining in on a number of workshops and skills training. She began her post-secondary education at Langara College in September of 2021 and has a passion for social justice. She has taken a leadership role in her community to bring change to the situation in Afghanistan through fundraisers and rallies, and has even given back to MOSAIC as a volunteer by providing language support to newly arrived Afghan families.

“It has been so neat to witness her growth and such a pleasure to support her. We can’t wait to keep witnessing the places she’ll go!”

Congratulations to Hannah and Nastaran from MOSAIC on all your incredible achievements!
