On National Seniors Day, October 1, MOSAIC will once again gather the community at the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre in Burnaby to honour the wisdom, imagination, and purpose of immigrant seniors during our annual Multicultural Seniors Day celebration. Since 2012, this vibrant event has grown into one of MOSAIC’s signature gatherings — for seniors, by seniors — drawing 300–500 participants each year.
This year’s theme, “From What Is to What If: The Power of Wisdom, Imagination, and Purpose,” invites us to celebrate the courage of seniors as they dream beyond limitations, reimagine aging, and transform everyday experiences into opportunities for growth and connection.
Breaking Barriers, Building Belonging
In Canada today, many immigrant seniors want to be more active in their communities but face barriers like language, transportation, and safety concerns. A 2025 national study found that 71% of older immigrants wish to join more social activities yet struggle to access them.
The Multicultural Seniors Day event changes that. Here, seniors aren’t just participants. They’re leaders, performers, and storytellers. Their voices fill the room, their traditions light up the stage, and their experiences remind us all of the strength and creativity that come with age.
This annual celebration proves that aging can be joyful, active, and full of possibility. It is a season of life where wisdom and imagination shine the brightest.
Highlights of the 2025 Program
This year’s celebration blends ceremony, creativity, and community connection. The day will open with an Indigenous welcome and drumming circle, followed by reflections from dignitaries and community leaders. Seniors are invited to wear traditional clothing, adding cultural pride and colour to the day’s joyful spirit.
A special highlight will be the presentation of the SAGE Awards (Seniors Aging with Grace and Excellence). These honours celebrate seniors who have gone “Above and Beyond” in their compassion, leadership, and volunteerism, recognizing their outstanding contributions to MOSAIC, their peers, and the wider community.
Multicultural performances will bring energy and vibrancy throughout the program. Seniors will showcase their creativity through interactive dance, Tai Chi, and performances by MOSAIC Seniors Club, and the day will close with a seniors-led collective dance — a joyful finale to the celebration. Meanwhile, community resource booths will be available all day, creating opportunities to connect, learn, and share.
Community Collaboration in Action
The event is co-created with the MOSAIC Seniors Council, senior volunteer leaders, and community groups, with support from BC CRN, the City of Burnaby, and local partners. It embodies MOSAIC’s commitment to building inclusive communities where seniors are recognized as leaders and changemakers.
