MOSAIC celebrates annual Award Ceremony virtually

October 27, 2020

More than 90 people gathered virtually to celebrate the inspiring 2020 MOSAIC award recipients.

Held October 22, the ceremony was a chance to recognize the efforts of a number of outstanding refugees and immigrants who are pursuing post-secondary education in Canada. Awards were also presented to organizations and individuals who go above and beyond to advance equity, diversity and inclusion in our society.

The event began with a traditional welcome from Elder Latash-Maurice Nahanee of the Squamish Nation, who emphasized the importance of embracing differences to create a strong community.

Following Elder Latash’s welcome, MOSAIC was delighted to be joined virtually by another special guest all the way from Waterloo, Ontario. The Honourable Bardish Chagger, federal Minister of Diversity and Inclusion and Youth, congratulated and recognized all the award recipients while reflecting on the contributions of newcomers and immigrants to Candian society.

“Here in Canada, diversity has always been one of our greatest strengths. Yet we must never forget that a multicultural society – one that is truly open and inclusive – is always a work in progress.”

In total, five awards were presented: the Dr. Kes Chetty Award, the Eyob G. Naizghi Scholarship Award, the Ann and Jo-Ann Sobkow Award, the Employer Recognition Award and the Human Rights Award. Through a combination of touching videos, speeches, and slideshows, each recipient’s story was shared. Below is a list of the award winners:

Dr. Kes Chetty Award – Bdoor Albasha, Carmen Aldaklallah, and Mia Roxas

Eyob G. Naizghi Scholarship Award – Ayan Ismail

The evening finished with a special video message from the Hon. Marco Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship.

“2020 has been a challenging year for all of us, yet we see through this year’s MOSAIC award recipients the resilience and shining example of those who have persevered and who are making a difference in their communities.”
