By Guangke Dai, Communications Officer (Dr. Kes Chetty Education Award)
The Dr. Kes Chetty Education Award is an annual recognition presented to MOSAIC clients, immigrants, or refugees who wish to pursue academic or vocational studies. It was established to support individuals of all ages who have shown a commitment to making a positive impact in Canada.
This year, we are thrilled to shine a spotlight on three exceptional winners. Their unwavering dedication to their academic pursuits and community involvement is truly inspiring. They embody the values of perseverance and service, setting a remarkable example for all of us.
Rema Estifanos Werede
Rema Estifanos Werede, a Grade 12 student at New Westminster Secondary School, arrived in Canada a year and a half ago to reunite with her father after 15 years of separation. Despite facing language barriers and cultural adjustments, Rema has excelled academically and actively participated in community activities.
Rema has shown remarkable resilience and determination. She has made significant contributions to her community through various volunteer roles. She participated in the Youth Leadership and Documentary Project with MOSAIC Youth Programs, assisted in organizing the “New to New West” event for the City of New Westminster, and supported the Newcomer Lunch Program through the Settlement Workers in School Programs. Additionally, Rema has facilitated peer support groups for the Multicultural Youth Circle Program with ISSofBC.
Her lived experience as a newcomer has been invaluable in supporting other newcomer youth, helping them navigate their new environment and feel welcomed. Through her involvement in MOSAIC’s youth programs and volunteering at community events, Rema has not only improved her English but also built a strong network of friends.
Rema’s outstanding academic performance, coupled with her extensive community involvement, highlights her dedication to making a positive impact.
Looking ahead, Rema is determined to achieve her goal of becoming a nurse: “My main goal after high school is to go for a nursing program. I like to study more about the human body. I have applied to Douglas College for this program.” Her aspiration is deeply rooted in her empathy and desire to help others, inspired by her father’s work in healthcare.
This award will support Rema in her educational journey and assist her family in achieving financial stability as they settle in Canada. We are excited to see her future unfold and are confident that she will make a significant impact in her chosen field.
