We are honoured to welcome Sophie Lui, anchor of Global News at 5 and co‑anchor of Global BC News Hour at 6, as the Master of Ceremonies for Mosaic’s Gala Luncheon. Born and raised in the Lower Mainland, Sophie is a proud BCIT Broadcast Journalism graduate and a trusted voice in local news, known for her thoughtful storytelling and deep connection to the community.
Throughout her career, Sophie has received numerous accolades, including a Canadian Screen Award for Best Local Newscast and the Shelley Fralic Award from the Jack Webster Foundation, recognizing her excellence in journalism. Beyond the newsroom, she is actively involved in the community, serving on nonprofit boards and supporting causes that strengthen and uplift British Columbia’s diverse communities. Sophie’s warmth, credibility, and passion for meaningful dialogue make her a perfect host for this special event.
Now pursuing a degree in Political Science at the University of British Columbia, Muhaddisa channels her academic interests into activism focused on refugee protection, international law, and gender equity; particularly for Afghan women and girls. Her leadership and community impact have been widely recognized: she is a 2023 recipient of the prestigious Loran Award, Canada’s largest undergraduate merit-based scholarship, and the Eyob G. Naizghi Scholarship for refugee leadership.
Muhaddisa’s message has reached audiences across Canada and beyond. In 2023, she delivered a moving TEDx talk titled “What It Takes to Be a Refugee,” highlighting the resilience, hopes, and humanity of displaced people. She has also represented Canadian youth at the 68th Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York.
Today, she is charting her way through UBC while co-founding Parastoo, an initiative created with her brother Abdullah to give back to the refugee community that raised her. Through Parastoo, she provides education about refugee rights and resources to newcomers and displaced individuals, continuing her mission to turn adversity into advocacy and compassion into action. She envisions a future as a human-rights lawyer or policy maker, continuing to empower refugee and newcomer youth while staying rooted in her global community.
