In the journey of settling into a new country, education serves as a beacon of hope and a foundation for future success. Recognizing the importance of education in building a new life, MOSAIC proudly supports the dedication and achievements of newcomers.
This year, we are delighted to present the Educational Enhancement Award to five outstanding individuals. Join us in congratulating these remarkable recipients on their inspiring accomplishments.
Ruqaiya Al Lawati
Ruqaiya is from Oman and arrived in Canada in June 2022. In her home country, she faced discrimination and unfair family laws, prompting her decision to pursue a safer and more prosperous life for herself and her daughter. Life as a single mother presented challenges, but she remains determined to build a better future.
Despite holding a Master’s degree in Professional Accounting from Australia, Ruqaiya faced challenges finding employment in Canada due to a lack of Canadian experience and credential recognition. She is preparing to enroll in the CPA program in British Columbia. The MOSAIC Educational Enhancement Award will provide financial support, covering the costs of necessary courses and professional goals, relieving financial burdens, and reinforcing her belief in a brighter future in Canada.
Vitaliia Atamaniuk
Vitaliia Atamaniuk is originally from Ukraine and arrived in Canada in 2022. Fleeing the war, she sought safety for her family. She was a surgeon and researcher at Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University in Ukraine, holding positions as an MD, PhD, General Surgeon, and Assistant Professor. To adjust to new medical licensing requirements in Canada, she is improving her English and taking courses at Camosun College.
The MOSAIC Educational Enhancement Award will allow Vitaliia to concentrate on her studies and professional development. This assistance will enable her to take additional courses, attend workshops, and cover the costs associated with certification exams. Vitaliia’s plans include obtaining the necessary certifications to practice medicine in Canada and continuing her work in both clinical and academic settings. She is committed to using her expertise to serve the community and mentor other newcomers in the medical field.
Yahya Bakour
Yahya Bakour, from Syria, arrived in Canada in August 2020. He learned English from scratch, completed high school, and is now studying general science at Langara College with plans to transfer to UBC for nursing. Yahya’s motivation to pursue a career in healthcare stems from his younger brother’s medical condition, which required extensive treatment and inspired him to help others in similar situations.
Yahya is actively involved in his community, volunteering at a thrift store, a food bank, and a community centre, where he helps with various activities and supports newcomers. His dedication to giving back is evident in his efforts to raise awareness and funds through initiatives like creating a YouTube channel with his brothers to promote neighbourhood clean-ups.
The MOSAIC Educational Enhancement Award will significantly support Yahya’s educational journey, alleviating financial pressures and enabling him to focus on his studies.
Tom K.
Originally from Hong Kong, Tom K arrived in Canada to escape political persecution. For safety reasons, he uses a pseudonym.
Despite disruptions to his education caused by unrest, he excelled academically and earned a scholarship in Canada. Inspired by his experiences as a first aid responder during the protests in Hong Kong, he aims to become a nurse. Currently enrolled in a local nursing program, Tom plans to further his education at a reputable institution in Vancouver. The MOSAIC Educational Enhancement Award will ease his financial burden, allowing him to prioritize his academic and professional development.
Committed to giving back, Tom volunteers with local organizations and participates in events raising awareness about human rights issues in Hong Kong. His dedication and resilience highlight his determination to make a positive impact in his new home.
Abdelrahman Mustafa
Abdelrahman Mustafa, originally from Somalia, moved to Saudi Arabia as a baby but was deported back in 2013. Seeking safety, he fled to Egypt, living as a refugee for ten years. His life changed when St. Andrew’s-Wesley United Church sponsored him, bringing him to Canada in February 2023.
Upon arrival, Abdelrahman immediately sought education. He completed English courses, enrolled in an IT support specialist course, and finished a web development boot camp. Funded by the MOSAIC Educational Enhancement Award, Abdelrahman plans to continue his education at BCIT for a career in computer science or engineering. This support will help him achieve his long-term goal of earning a bachelor’s and master’s degree.
Abdelrahman has also been actively volunteering with organizations like the Burnaby Intercultural Planning Table (BIPT) and MOSAIC. His dedication to education and community service reflects his determination to build a better future in Canada.
Congratulations to all the award winners! We look forward to seeing your exciting futures unfold and witnessing your success. Read more about the awards.
