For newcomer parents, learning English can be a vital step toward building a new life in Canada. At MOSAIC, we understand that this journey is much easier when families feel supported as a whole. That is why our LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) Early Learning Programs offer free, licensed, family-centred care for children while their parents attend English classes.
These programs are more than safe spaces. They are designed to help children grow socially, emotionally, and developmentally, guided by Licensed Early Childhood Educators using the BC Early Learning Framework and a child-centred approach. Parents often tell us that this combination of learning and care has been life-changing — for their children, and for them.
This year, several families from our Vancouver and Surrey programs shared their stories. Each is different, but together they paint a picture of what early learning can mean during a child’s first years in Canada.
Building Confidence for School
When Victor first joined MOSAIC childcare, he was still finding his place in a new environment. Over time, his teachers saw him become more confident and eager to participate. As he prepares to start kindergarten, his mother reflects on his progress with gratitude:

For Victor and his family, the program provided not just care, but a strong foundation for school readiness.
From Shy to Joyful
Angel’s experience shows how quickly children can flourish when they feel safe and supported. Before joining, she was shy and did not want to be apart from her mother. But within a few weeks, her family noticed a change. Angel began looking forward to her days at childcare, often saying she wanted to see her teachers and friends, even on holidays and weekends.
Her sister explained how much progress she made:

Angel’s journey highlights how childcare can nurture independence and language skills in ways that benefit the whole family.
A Second Home
For Sebouh, MOSAIC childcare was part of his life for three years, starting when he was not yet two years old. His mother, Rina, remembers how the teachers welcomed him with patience and warmth from the very beginning.

Longer stays like Sebouh’s show the steady impact of consistent care and connection, giving children a strong start before they move on to kindergarten.
Growing Through Support
Not every child’s journey is smooth, and sometimes additional support is needed. When Rohan joined the program, he struggled with speech and found it difficult to share with others. Educators worked closely with his mother to create a care plan and, with her consent, referred him to additional developmental services.
Together, the family and educators encouraged new strategies both in class and at home. Slowly, Rohan began using more words, playing with peers, and joining group activities with enthusiasm. His mother, Sumaia, shared how meaningful that progress was:

Rohan’s story reflects the program’s commitment to working in partnership with families, tailoring care to each child’s needs.
Everyday Milestones
Some changes may seem small, but they matter just as much. Erfan, for example, had trouble sharing and was reluctant to try new foods. With gentle guidance, he learned to take turns, join activities, and even taste new dishes with pride. His mother, Bilqess, noticed the difference at home:

Stories like Erfan’s remind us that development is not only about big milestones, but also about the everyday progress that builds confidence and joy.
The Educators’ Perspective
Behind every story are the educators who guide, encourage, and collaborate with families every day. Their role goes beyond the classroom: they build trust with parents, notice small but important milestones, and ensure each child’s needs are met.
“Working with newcomer families is an inspiring and rewarding journey. Watching children adapt, grow, and uncover their strengths is not only motivating but also a powerful reminder of why we do this work.
Our team of certified and experienced educators partners closely with families—connecting them to free community resources, co-creating individualized plans when needed, and ensuring that each child’s unique needs are met while fostering group engagement.
Parents are invited to workshops to learn more about their child’s growth, and they receive monthly pedagogical narrations to stay connected to their child’s learning. Through this collaborative, team-based approach, children develop confidence, foundational skills, and school readiness, while families feel supported, informed, and empowered.”

Parents interested in enrolling can register for LINC classes and Early Learning Programs together. Registration and waitlists are managed by LINC Program Support Workers, ensuring children can attend the Early Learning Programs while parents or guardians participate in classes.
Each of these stories is unique, yet together they show the heart of MOSAIC’s Early Learning Programs. Whether it is a child finding their first words, building friendships, or taking confident steps into kindergarten, these moments matter. We are proud to celebrate them with the families who trust us with their children’s earliest years.
