MOSAIC Seniors Club delivers impactful musical performance

March 22, 2024

On March 13, MOSAIC’s senior choir and musical theatre group premiered their performance of “Seniors Take On Things We Never Talk About” on the Michael J. Fox Theatre stage. Andrea Montgomery Di Marco, PhD, the writer and director of this musical, highlighted the critical yet often overlooked issue of senior abuse within our communities. (burnaby events)

The performance, delivered by a cast of immigrant seniors, tackled the complex themes of elder mistreatment, the stigma surrounding love in later life, and the universal craving for connection. Through a combination of sensitive dialogue and music, the musical also addressed loneliness, friendship, abandonment, isolation, and the search for meaning and purpose.

Over six months, these senior performers dedicated themselves to mastering a new script, learning original songs, perfecting dance steps, and understanding the intricacies of stage production. Despite challenges such as anxiety and memorizing lines in English, their commitment to personal growth and expression was evident. This musical theatre piece demonstrates the significant impact of encouraging seniors to embrace new challenges, celebrate their identities, and express themselves creatively.

Driven by the desire to advocate for others and draw attention to the often-unseen issue of senior abuse, the cast approached their roles with a profound sense of responsibility. The premiere on March 13 received positive reviews from the audience, who described it as both thought-provoking and emotionally resonant.

“Seniors Take On Things We Never Talk About” seeks to start important conversations on elder abuse, stereotypes of aging, the importance of companionship, and agency. By bringing these issues to the forefront, the musical aims to contribute to the creation of more inclusive and understanding communities. seniors club musical
