Gender-based violence remains a significant issue worldwide, impacting individuals, families, and communities in profound ways. The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, observed annually from November 25 to December 10, is a global campaign dedicated to raising awareness, promoting prevention, and fostering action against all forms of gender-based violence. This campaign encourages reflection, education, and collective responsibility to create safer and more equitable communities.

At MOSAIC, we recognize the importance of every voice in addressing gender-based violence. Participating in the 16 Days of Activism can take many forms, and every contribution matters. Some individuals may choose to engage through writing, whether sharing personal reflections, stories of resilience, or educational content. Others may prefer small conversations with friends, colleagues, or community members to raise awareness and challenge harmful attitudes. Creating safe spaces whether in schools, workplaces, or community settings can also be a powerful way to support survivors and foster dialogue about prevention and healing.

The academic study of gender-based violence highlights the systemic, social, and structural factors that perpetuate harm. Understanding these dynamics allows us to approach activism thoughtfully, combining personal action with evidence-based strategies to create meaningful change. By learning about the patterns of abuse, power imbalances, and societal norms that sustain violence, we can advocate more effectively for survivors and communities.

Engaging in the 16 Days of Activism is not only a form of solidarity, it is a step toward creating awareness, promoting justice, and strengthening community resilience. By taking part, we collectively send a clear message that violence against any individual is unacceptable and that prevention, support, and education are shared responsibilities.

MOSAIC’s Violence Prevention programs are committed to supporting individuals impacted by gender-based violence. Our confidential, multicultural services provide one-on-one counselling, support groups, educational workshops, and outreach programs, all designed to empower individuals, strengthen resilience, and provide the tools needed to navigate complex challenges safely. Within this work, Multicultural Outreach Services offers confidential, culturally sensitive support, safety planning, legal referrals, and advocacy for victims of crime in Vancouver and Burnaby.

The 16 Days of Activism is an opportunity for all of us to reflect on our role in fostering safety, equity, and inclusion. Every voice, every conversation, and every safe space contributes to a community where everyone has the right to live free from violence and fear.
