Are you new to Canada and wondering how to navigate the healthcare system? Join us for an informative session specifically designed to help newcomers understand how to access healthcare in Canada.

Event Details:

Hosted by the UBC Medicine Refugee Health Initiative, this event will provide valuable insights into the Canadian healthcare system. You will learn the steps to seek medical care, how to effectively communicate your health concerns with healthcare providers, and what resources are available for newcomers.

What You’ll Learn about the healthcare in Canada:

  • An Overview of the Healthcare System in Canada: Learn how the healthcare system works in Canada. We will explain what public healthcare is, how provincial health insurance plans work, and what medical services they cover. You will also learn about different types of healthcare services, like family doctors and hospitals, and how to use them.
  • How to Access Healthcare Services as a Newcomer: Find out how to get healthcare services when you are new to Canada. This includes how to find a family doctor or clinic, and what to do in an emergency. We will explain what healthcare services you can use and how to deal with any problems you might face.
  • Tips for Communicating with Doctors and Healthcare Providers: Learn how to talk to doctors and other healthcare providers. We will give you tips on how to explain your symptoms and health problems, ask questions, and understand the doctor’s advice. We will also talk about medical interpretation services if English is not your first language and how to ask for these services.
