Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) held their second event this year to welcome newcomers to the community of New Westminster. The Spring Celebration Multicultural Potluck Gathering was held at Lord Kelvin Community HUB on March 30. More than 30 people were in attendance, including Peter Julian, MP for New Westminster-Burnaby and Judy Darcy, MLA for New Westminster as well as Lord Kelvin’s principle Ken Millard. Stories were shared, settlement information was exchanged, and new friendships were made. “Acknowledging the rhythm of the seasons is a common theme among different peoples, so we have been building cross-cultural understanding through winter and spring celebrations. We will host another gathering in the summer and hope to see you there,” says Yumi Onozawa, SWIS Coordinator.Settlement Workers in Schools is a free program to assist newcomer students and their families as they adapt to life in Canada.
