MOSAIC Seniors Club and over 250 seniors—mostly newcomers—celebrated the United Nations’ International Day of Older Persons and the National Senior’s Day today at a multicultural gathering at the Bonsor Recreation Complex on Saturday.Sustainability was the theme this year and the seniors were excited to learn about recycling and other tips for green living. Thanks to Platinum Sponsor Vancity Savings Credit Union, this was a zero-waste event.Community dignitaries, including Peter Julian, MP of Burnaby-New Westminster, Burnaby MLAs Kathy Corrigan, Raj Chouhan and Jane Shin came together to acknowledge the important roles that seniors play in sustainable communities.Jane Shin, MLA Burnaby-Lougheed, Sherman Chan and Khim Tan (MOSAIC), Kathy Corrigan, ML Burnaby-Deer Lake and members of the Jessica Dancing Studio“Sustainability is also about community,” notes Sherman Chan, Director of Family & Settlement Services. “Caring about the environment is really an extension of caring about each other.” Volunteers, including Vancity staff volunteers, embodied this spirit today.Multicultural community dance groups entertained the seniors and many community resources were also on site to show the seniors the services available for them.The Burnaby RCMP also had a presentation delivered by Superintendent Stephan Drolet.Stephan Drolet, Superintdendent of the Burnaby RCMP, gave a presentation to the seniors.
