Hosted at Bonsor Recreation Complex, 300 seniors and their families came out on September 13 to learn about community resources from 20 senior-serving organizations.The seniors were treated to a light lunch and traditional dancing, drumming and music from China, Japan and Korea, performed by Yongjoo (Julie) Kim, and Seniors Chinese Society of Vancouver (Burnaby Branch) and Vancouver Okinawa Taiko. The event also saw the introduction of the Seniors Champion Award that was given to an active senior who has shown an exemplary role in volunteering and showcasing the contribution of immigrant seniors in the community. Jeremy Eitzen, representative of Platinum Sponsor McDonald’s Restaurants of Canada, Dennis Bevington, MP Northwest Territories; Peter Julian, MP Burnaby-New Westminster; Raj Chouhan MLA Burnaby-Edmonds were at the event to present the MOSAIC Seniors Champion Award and Congratulatory Certificates to Sheila Aou, Ling Hua, Peter Lee and Vivienne Megas, four immigrant seniors who were recognized for being especially active volunteers in the community.Other community dignitaries who came out for the event included Burnaby School District trustees; Kennedy Stewart, MP Burnaby-Douglas; and Burnaby City Councillor Paul McDonnell, who all dropped by to say a few words of welcome to the seniors.We thank our Platinum Sponsor McDonald’s Restaurants of Canada, Gold Sponsor Safe Care Home Support, as well as Community Sponsors BC Centre for Elder Support & Advocacy, BC Responsible & Program Gambling Program, the Real Canadian Superstore and TransLink.Special thanks to our volunteers, who provided language support in 10 languages, and ensured that seniors were able to communicate their needs and questions at the resource booths.
