What Employers Really Want to See

If there’s one thing employers consistently value, it’s preparation.

Long-time exhibitor Milani Plumbing, Heating, & Air Conditioning encourages job seekers to approach employer booths with purpose. Before the event, prepare for job fair by researching the participating companies, identifying roles that interest you, and coming ready to explain how your skills align with their needs.

Simply handing over a resume and asking, “What am I qualified for?” isn’t enough. Showing genuine enthusiasm makes all the difference.

Providence Health Care (PHC), another frequent exhibitor, recommends reflecting on your unique strengths—whether it’s lived experience, multilingual abilities, or transferable skills—and communicating them confidently.

PHC also reminds job seekers to keep an open mind: there are many roles in healthcare beyond clinical positions, including opportunities in administration, IT, and logistics. Asking thoughtful questions and following up afterwards can help turn a first conversation into a lasting opportunity.

How to Stand Out at the MOSAIC Job Fair

1. Do Your Research

Walking into the job fair prepared will put you miles ahead of other candidates.

Visit the MOSAIC Job Fair website and explore the list of participating employers. Identify your top choices, explore job openings, and learn about each company’s mission and values.

2. Tailor Your Resume

Make sure your resume is concise, polished, and aligned with the roles you’re targeting. Consider preparing multiple versions if you’re applying to different types of jobs. Highlight the most relevant experience and skills for each opportunity.

3. Practice Your Elevator Pitch

This is your 30-second introduction—who you are, what you do, why you are a perfect fit for the role, and what you’re looking for. Craft it to leave a memorable impression.

Example: “Hi, I’m Sam, a customer service professional with five years of experience in retail and hospitality. I noticed you’re hiring for a front desk coordinator—I’d love to learn more.”

4. Dress Professionally

Choose clean, well-fitted clothing that makes a positive impression and feels appropriate for your potential role. While traditional business casual is a good option, don’t stress about spending a lot of money on formal outfits. The goal is to look polished and put-together, so focus on neatness and comfort.

If you’re applying for hands-on roles, such as in healthcare or trades, simple and practical clothing that shows you’re ready to work is perfectly fine.

5. Bring Extra Resumes

Print 10–15 copies of your resume and bring them in a folder to keep them neat. If you don’t have access to a printer, visit your local library, where they can assist you with printing.

Bonus Tip: Bring a notepad to jot down key info or contact details.

6. Ask Thoughtful Questions

Show you are prepared by asking meaningful questions like:

  • “What qualities do you look for in an ideal candidate?”

  • “Are there opportunities for professional development within your organization?”

7. Stay Open to New Paths

Recruiters might suggest roles you haven’t considered. Stay curious and flexible—you might find something unexpected that’s a great fit.

8. Know Your Value

Think about what sets you apart. Your lived experience, languages spoken, education, and transferable skills are all valuable—own them with confidence.

9. Follow Up After the Fair

Send a thank-you email or LinkedIn message to recruiters you spoke with. Mention something you discussed and express your continued interest. It’s a great way to stay connected and leave a lasting impression.

10. Network Beyond the Booths

Beyond job applications, the event is a chance to network with other attendees and recruiters.

Talk to fellow job seekers, share tips, and support each other. Sometimes, a helpful suggestion from another attendee can lead to your next opportunity.
