Support for Newcomers with Disabilities

MOSAIC is committed to ensuring that our programs and services are accessible to people with disabilities.

We advocate for the inclusion of newcomers with disabilities at MOSAIC as well as in their communities.

Program staff provide one-on-one assistance to help our clients overcome barriers they may be experiencing due to their disability.

We collaborate with MOSAIC staff and community service providers to find solutions and access resources to meet our clients’ individual needs.

Eligibility

This Program is for newcomers who have a self-disclosed disability and are:

  • Immigrants
  • International / Visiting Students

  •  Refugees and Protected Persons
  • Privately sponsored refugees

    • Citizens
    • Migrant workers: open / closed work permit holders

Program Description

Newcomers with disabilities may experience unique challenges when they come to Canada.

Support Process: Here’s how we can help navigate these challenges:

  1. Intake: First, clients will complete an intake with their Settlement Worker or Case Manager.
  2. Referral: The Settlement Worker or Case Manager will request assistance from our Accessibility for Newcomers Program.
  3. Needs Assessment: Program staff will contact the client to assess their individual needs and follow up with the Settlement Worker or Case Manager.

Here is how the program can help:

  • Accommodations: Help with accessing MOSAIC’s programs and services.
  • Wayfinding: Assistance with planning travel to MOSAIC service locations as well as information about building accessibility.
  • Language Services: Access to interpretation, including American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Alternative Formats: Provision of materials in large print, audio, and Braille.
  • Technology Info: Information about accessible digital technology, software, assistive devices, and adaptive equipment.
  • Employment Support: Referral to WorkBC Service providers for employment support services.
  • Legal Support: Referral to MOSAIC’s Legal Advocacy Program for help with disability benefits and tax deductions.
  • Support Services for Families: Resources and referral to community service providers for children with disabilities.
  • Follow-Up: Ongoing support for clients referred to community service providers.
