About this Award

The MOSAIC Educational Enhancement Award is given annually to deserving recipients to support their educational and post-secondary goals.

The MOSAIC Awards Committee will give five recipients $5,000 each to pursue academic, professional or vocational studies.

Award Criteria

Recipients are selected for meeting some or all of the below criteria:

  • New arrival or refugee
  • Have a financial need

  • Living in Canada for less than 5 years
  • Have been accepted to an educational program or have a plan to enhance their education

  • Wants to pursue academic, professional, or vocational studies
  • Open to all ages

The MOSAIC Educational Enhancement Award may be renewed yearly for the applicant, for a total award of $20,000 over four consecutive years. The recipient will engage in a renewal process each year and school transcripts must be submitted with the renewal application.

2023-2024 Recipients

Abdelrahman Mustafa, Tom K, Yahya Bakour, Ruqaiya Allawati, Vitaliia Atamaniuk
  • Abdelrahman holds a high school diploma and completed the Google IT Support Professional Certificate with Npower Canada. He plans to pursue a Software Development Bootcamp at UBC and is involved with the Immigrant Advisory Council and the Burnaby Intercultural Planning Table. In these roles, he advocates for immigrant perspectives, and promotes cultural inclusivity within Burnaby’s immigrant communities.
  • Tom is dedicated to pursuing a career in healthcare, aiming to become a Registered Nurse. He is eager to develop various skills, including leadership and communication, to contribute effectively to Canadian society in the future.
  • Yahya plans to pursue a Bachelor in Nursing and has completed one year at Langara College. Since arriving in Canada in 2020, he initiated a neighborhood cleaning project in Downtown Eastside, which was recognized by the BC Parks Foundation. He also led a youth soccer program, founded the Board Games Club at school, and volunteered at the Muslim Foodbank to address food insecurity.
  • Ruqaiya holds a Master’s in Accounting and a Bachelor’s in Finance and Business. She plans to pursue CPA PREP and PEP to start her career in accounting in Canada. She is committed to leveraging her expertise and making a meaningful contribution to Canadian society.
  • Vitaliia holds an MD and PhD and is a General Surgeon from Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University. She plans to pursue The Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE). The Award will enable her to advance her medical career in the Canadian healthcare system.
