Daphne Bramham for the Vancouver Sun writes, “Anna Bielousova, her husband, six kids, two cats, her parents and members of 12 other families who worked for Sergii Bielousov’s Kyiv-based company are all safe in a hotel in a village outside Krakow, Poland. For that, they’re all extremely grateful. They’ve been well-taken-care-of since their emotional and chaotic three-day exodus that started Feb. 24, little more than an hour after the Russian attack began.
There are 28 adults and 34 children. The adults are exhausted, physically, mentally and emotionally. Feeling the burden most are women whose husbands stayed behind to fight. Alone with children, they must decide: Do they stay in Poland where their families might be more quickly reunited when the war ends? Or do they take advantage of the offers of refuge from other European countries or those as far away as New Zealand, Australia and Japan? For now, they’re sticking together. Sergii feels responsible for them.”
