The public are invited to attend a forum at MOSAIC’s Head Office on Refugee Rights Day when Professor Dan Hiebert will summarize newly available data regarding the financial outcome for refugees in Canada between 1980 to 2011. The Big Picture: What does the economic integration of refugees look like in the long run?will be presented at MOSAIC’s head office, 1720 Grant Street, on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 from 5:30-7 p.m.
Although it is a common understanding that refugees in Canada face economic and other barriers throughout their lives, the new data indicate that despite prolonged economic marginalization, most are able to achieve financial independence and even upward economic mobility. The results of the presented analysis will be relevant for the way Canadians view our refugee programs.
Dr. Dan Hiebert is a UBC professor of geography whose research interests focus on international migration and the relationship between national security, cultural diversity and human rights. Since 2010, he has served as Co-Chair of the City of Vancouver Mayor’s Working Group on Immigration, and he is the founding Co-Director of the Canadian Network for Research on Terrorism, Security, and Society (TSAS).
Refugee Rights Day in Canada pays tribute to April 4th as the day that the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms was interpreted to guarantee refugees the same basic rights as anyone in Canada – to life, liberty, and the security of the person.
