A forum for Amharic, Oromo and Tigrinya-speaking communities in Burnaby and New Westminster was held on March 25. MOSAIC’s Moving Ahead Program (serving newcomers facing multiple barriers in their settlement) co-hosted the community forum alongside Edmonds Community School, where the event took place.
Approximately 120 people were onsite to discuss the successful settlement and integration of newcomers into the larger community. Many community leaders and members of the Amharic, Oromo and Tigrinya-speaking communities participated in the forum.
The forum was opened by Sherman Chan, Director of Family and Settlement Services and facilitated by Natasha Bailey. Eyob Naizghi, MOSAIC Executive Director, gave the keynote address. He said that “The forum helps people to recognize the strength and success of their communities, and shows that “community members can help each other to settle successful in Canada and to improve on the quality of life within their own communities”
