May 17 is the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT). Founded by Louis-Georges Tin in 2004, this day is dedicated to raising awareness of LGBTQIA2+ rights violations worldwide. In Quebec, Canada, Fondation Émergence initiated the National Day Against Homophobia in 2003, which later inspired the global movement. In 2009, the title expanded to include transphobia, and then again in 2015 to include biphobia.

IDAHOBIT now serves as a crucial day to raise awareness of LGBTQIA2+ rights violations, combat discrimination, and promote acceptance and equality for the LGBTQIA2+ community.

This year’s theme, “No one left behind: equality, freedom, and justice for all,” particularly resonates with the experiences of individuals like Theo, a recent arrival in Canada who identifies as transgender and non-binary. Their journey is not just one of transitioning from one country to another but also about finding a community that embraces diversity and champions acceptance through programs like MOSAIC’s ‘I Belong.’

A brave move

Originally from France, Theo arrived in Canada just two months ago, seeking a more accepting society that better understands and respects non-binary identities. “I wanted to try living in another country,” Theo shares. “I knew that in Canada, people were more accepting of trans identities.” As a non-binary individual, Theo faced challenges in France where the concept of non-binary identity was often misunderstood. “People in France often don’t understand what non-binary means; they think you’re either a man or a woman.”

Finding support

Upon arriving in Canada, Theo was greeted by visible signs of inclusivity that contrasted sharply with their previous experiences. “What I really like is seeing a lot of flags on companies… even the firefighters have a big flag on their trucks, not only the rainbow one, but also a big one for trans,” Theo notes. These public displays of support provided a constant reminder of the inclusive values held by their new home.

Theo found valuable resources in MOSAIC’s ‘I Belong’ program, specifically designed to support LGBTQIA2+ newcomers. “I was searching online for trans resources and found the ‘I Belong’ program. At first, I wasn’t sure if it was for me, but my friend encouraged me to join, and I’m glad I did,” Theo recalls. The program has enabled them to connect with others facing similar challenges, fostering a supportive community and mutual understanding.

Journey ahead

While Theo appreciates the open-mindedness in Canada, they still face occasional challenges, particularly around pronouns. “Sometimes people assume my gender based on my voice, but I’m thinking of getting a pin that says ‘they/them’ to make it clearer.” Despite these minor issues, Theo finds the Canadian environment refreshing and supportive, particularly in their neighborhood in West End Vancouver, known for its inclusivity.

Professionally, Theo aims to secure a position in logistics, leveraging their expertise in the field. They are looking forward to experiencing the local work environment. “My short-term goal is to find a job to support myself,” they state. “And my long-term goal is to get more involved in the community, not only LGBT (community), but also in the community where I live. I hope to meet new people and create meaningful connections here.”

Theo’s experience with MOSAIC’s ‘I Belong’ program underscores the significant impact that supportive communities and initiatives can have on individuals navigating important life transitions. As we observe IDAHOBIT, Theo’s story reminds us of the continuous need for solidarity, understanding, and action to ensure equality, freedom, and justice for all.
