E-Petition Calls for Waiver of Travel Loans for All Refugees

October 3, 2016

When the federal government announced in 2015 that Canada was welcoming 25,000 Syrians, it waived the travel loan that requires refugees to repay the cost of travelling to Canada. The repayment of these loans begins soon after arrival, and places a burden on a vulnerable group that often have no language skills, employment skills, or resources of their own. A man named Scott Fenwick from Edmonton, Alberta has now initiated an e-petition calling on the government to waive this loan for ALL refugees, as it has for the Syrian refugees.
