It’s a shocking statistic: five years after arriving in Canada, the average newcomer is generally in worse health than when they first arrived.
Initiatives to break down barriers to newcomer health are featured in the newly released MOSAIC Annual Report 2019-2020.
Providing a comprehensive snapshot of MOSAIC’s work over the past fiscal year, the Annual Report 2019-2020 highlights the many programs and services that have served newcomers over the past year, particularly as MOSAIC staff pivoted to online service delivery during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In this report, you’ll meet Zarif Akbarian, who began his journey to Canada as a refugee, and is now utilizing his experience as an international medical graduate to coordinate health promotion programs at MOSAIC. You’ll learn about Ebru Merkepci, who began volunteering at MOSAIC out of a desire to give back to other newcomers. And you’ll read the story of Ifi Moutsakapas, who recently celebrated 30 years at MOSAIC as an English Second Language Instructor.
“These individual stories make up an important part of a larger whole – hundreds of volunteers, clients, staff, donors, and partners that work together to advance MOSAIC’s vision of an inclusive and thriving Canada,” said Olga Stachova, Chief Executive Officer of MOSAIC.
“We are incredibly grateful to all those who have supported MOSAIC over the past year, and continue to do so. As well, our staff have been incredible in pivoting to online programs and services in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, so that we can continue to meet the needs of our clients, as this Annual Report shares,” she added.
