Muslims in Canada recently celebrated Eid and marked the end of Ramadan.
Eid is a large celebration and religious holiday in many countries, including Afghanistan; after Eid prayer, many people visit each others’ homes and celebrate together.
Since August 2021, Canada has welcomed more than 10,000 Afghan refugees.
For many of them, this was their first Eid in a new home.
To celebrate with our clients, the Moving Ahead Program hosted a gathering for women and children – a Henna Party for newcomers, especially those recently arrived, to connect with their communities in Canada. Clients attended the party in their traditional attire, performed Attan – the national dance of Afghanistan – shared Afghan food, and celebrated the occasion with henna. Together they welcomed Eid with joy and peace in their hearts.
“I never thought that we could have a community in Canada where we can practice our traditions and culture. Being surrounded by our community is a privilege, especially when you are new,” said 19-year-old Maryam Hashimi, who recently arrived with her family in January. It was her first Eid in Canada away from her relatives and friends back home.
She hopes to attend more gatherings to make connections and friends.
The Moving Ahead Program hopes to organize more community events that celebrate our clients’ cultures and traditions. We thank all who attended and enjoyed the party!
